138 years of the Astronomical Observatory

The Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade celebrated its 138th anniversary with a formal event held at its premises. The ceremony was attended by representatives of numerous scientific, educational, and cultural institutions that collaborate with the Observatory.

The audience was addressed by the Observatory’s director, Dr. Luka Popović, who presented the institution’s key activities and accomplishments over the past year. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation, participation in research projects, and the achievements of young researchers working within the institution. Popović said that the Astronomical Observatory continues its mission as a leading scientific institution in the field of astronomy in Serbia and the region. In addition to research, it places great emphasis on the popularization of science and the education of young people.

As part of the ceremony, awards were traditionally presented to distinguished individuals and institutions. The award for scientific achievement was given to Dr. Edi Bon, while the award for contributions by young researchers went to Dr. Milan Stojanović. For significant contributions to the development of the Observatory by its employees, awards were presented to Jela Pešić, Ivan Vasić, and Sanja Todorović. Finally, the award for contributions to the development of the Observatory by external individuals and institutions was granted to Technoart Belgrade — a school of mechanical engineering and applied arts.

The event was held in a festive and friendly atmosphere, and guests had the opportunity to tour the Observatory’s historic buildings and learn about its modern instruments and ongoing projects.
